Several neighbors have met, several times, as the Fairhaven Neighbors’ ad hoc committee. After several revisions of a statement with that purpose the ad hoc committee asked the Fairhaven Neighbors Board of Directors to take a vote on a two page statement. The Board unanimously approved the statement affirming Fairhaven Neighbors’ right and intent to adhere to the multimodal policies in the City of Bellingham’s Fairhaven Neighborhood and Urban Plan (FNUVP). The statement was sent to the Mayor, City Council, Director of Planning, Steve Sundin, Senior Planner, and Director of Public Works. The statement asks the City to agree in writing that the City’s FNUVP policies ensure pedestrians shall have equal street access in the RT-2 and RT-3 subareas’ rights-of-way by not building sidewalks or widening streets in these areas. You can read our two page statement on this website in the “News & Highlights” section at fairhavenneighbors.org
Michael Lilliquist, our City Council representative, will work with Alex Zecha, Fairhaven Neighbors’ vice-president, to revise Bellingham Municipal Code so that it better matches the language and intent of the FNUVP.
The ad hoc committee continues its work on integrating the update of the City pedestrian & bicycle safety plan of 2012 as part of their efforts to protect and preserve our neighborhood.
Fairhaven Neighbors’ 2022 Plant and Tree Sale was a huge success on many levels. Decisions about how much we will donate of our net profits and to which non-profits we will donate to will be discussed in this meeting.
We made a successful intervention, with the help of Steve Nordeen of the Parks Department, to save the five cherry trees on 10th street at McKenzie. Steve Nordeen has recently deemed the five trees viable. The Fairhaven Tree Committee, which is a partnership of Fairhaven Neighbors and Historic Fairhaven will meet at 9 am on May 14 to weed and mulch the cherry trees on 10th Street. The Parks Department will provide mulch and tools. Help of more neighbors would be very welcome. It will not take long if there are many hands.
Brooks Anderson, President Fairhaven Neighbors
