Fairhaven was platted in 1883, and was one of four early towns which consolidated to become the City of Bellingham in 1904. In 1977, Fairhaven was designated a National Historic District.
“Fairhaven Neighbors” was incorporated in 1988 as a nonprofit corporation to serve the Fairhaven neighborhood community in Bellingham, Washington.
The Fairhaven neighborhood association came to be in the late 1980’s, as the groundwork was being laid to build the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway in the Fairhaven neighborhood at Harris and 4th Street. The neighbors created a formal neighborhood association and registered as a non-profit in the State of Washington as “Fairhaven Neighbors.” Early meetings were held at a neighbor’s home, and Paul Schissler was the first elected President.
